Soul, Pop songs are usually in greyscale or a sepia tone. This is because it makes the colours very soft which adds to the tone of the song because dark colours evoke emotion. The white balance on these videos is usually quite high because if the grey in the video goes more towards to the black side it can depict a sense of power instead of showing softness. If the video is not shot in greyscale, the colours in the video are softened and a lot of natural lighting is used to show a sense of reality. Slow Soul, Pop songs also usually follow a narrative, which means having a co-star alongside the musician this is a convention which is very common in slow songs.
Slow Soul, Pop songs are usually about being in love or breaking up. These kinds of “love” songs are usually done by females wear clothing that would depict them in the same light as goddesses; the clothing will be intense and colourful to show happiness in the song. Whereas if it is about breaking up the conventions that videos would use is the greyscale filter to show emotion, they would be wearing dark clothes. A lot of nude coloured/natural makeup will be used to convey the sense of natural beauty through the bland and monotonous mood, because there are a lot of close ups on the artists face. Some of these types of songs have a narrative but some of them will just be shots of the artist. A majority of the time the locations for love songs would be on a beach or a tropical island type of place (a lot of wide shots show the location). Songs about breaking up would take place in a plain black room which will probably have a chair or very minimal items in the room that the artist is situated in because these songs tend to concentrate on the artist rather than surroundings, by using close ups to show significant figure expression.
Adele’s ‘Make you feel my love’ shows neutral colours in the mise en scene. Her room is shown to be untidy and in an unorganised state. The use of the camera is slightly shaky and unstable showing Adele’s insecurity and lack of self confidence. Her whole video is based in her room where as mine and Lisa’s video is based on the main character in the narrative going on a quest to meet her love and make up for all troubles.
The song is sung in a deep and heartfelt emotional approach, with great meaning and sincerity. The lyrics have a great deal of meaning, the song is upsetting and distressing therefore the video gives off the hurtful type of mood rather than enthusiastic and animated. The video shows Adele reminiscing about her love in her dark and dingy room, she texts her love early in the morning in the beginning of the video. She is unoccupied and deserted in her isolated room. The genre of Adele’s ‘Make you feel my love’ are the opposite and go against the ideas of a pop or indie genre music video.
